Palm Beach Sailing Club celebrated 50 years of cat sailing on Pittwater, on Saturday 11 February. Cat sailors started the Pittwater Catamaran Club in 1962, which merged with the Palm Beach Sailing Club (founded 1949) in 1999. We think Palm Beach has launched more successful sailors than any other off the beach cat club in Australia, possibly the world?

Saturday's celebration regatta included speeches from our enthusiastic local politicians, who all love us to bits, and was attended by a selection of said champion sailors, including John Forbes and several members of the Waterhouse family. Boats included several F18s and A Class, and a bevy of Hobies, mainly the local 16s, but also a few nicely restored 14s. Hobie Waves provided some great introductory sailing for newcomers.
Racing was curtailed after just one race, thanks to a large thunderstorm cell that come over the hills from the west, which also affected all the other small boat sailors on the waterway. At one point the western sky turned green, but the boats were on the beach before any lightening struck. The afternoon sausage sizzle, beers and hot showers came a bit early.
All in all it was great day - thanks to all who came along, and we're looking forward to another 50 years of sailing fun and achievement. Palm Beach Sailing Club website
