Melges 24 SA State Titles lead to Alexander

'Melges 24 State Titles 2012'    Melges Asia Pacific

By the closing of the second day of the Riviera and Adelaide Shore Melges 24 SA State Titles, four different boats had a first place on the results sheet.

Race two of the series and South Australian local Gary Shanks (Outrage Us) picked a shift out to sea when the rest of the fleet chose to follow the shore. The decision paid off and by the start of the second lap he had extended his lead and finished well ahead of the fleet to take a well deserved gun.

The battle for first place in races 3 and 4 was between Kevin Nixon (Accru) and South Australian Dave Alexander (Foxtrot). The racing between the pair was tight, just crossing each other up and down wind and pressured by the rest of the fleet. Accru kept their cool and held Foxtrot out for a win in race 3.

By race 4 the breeze had filled in to a consistent 16-18 knots and choppy seas in St Vincent Gulf. Foxtrot paid back Accru by taking line honours in a spectacular finish half a metre ahead, Outrace Us in third place.

Boat of the day with two seconds and a first was local South Australian sailmaker Dave Alexander (Foxtrot) who will have to remain focused to hold off Kevin Nixon (Accru) one point behind after a drop heading into the final day's racing.
