Tomorrow’s Milson Cup short ocean race not only will decide the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Perseverance Trophy, but will also have a significant bearing on the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Grant Thornton Short Ocean Pointscore.
The Milson Cup has attracted more than 40 entries in two divisions competing under IRC and PHS handicaps, with the race over a 20 nautical mile ocean course off Sydney Heads, with the start and finish in the Harbour.
The Milson Cup is the last of three prestigious short ocean races conducted by the Squadron over the summer season, the previous ones having been the historic Gascoigne Cup and the Morna Cup.
The Perseverance Trophy, a beautifully-crafted model of a colonial brig made by late Squadron member Donald Maclurcan, goes to the top-scoring yacht on PHS handicaps in the three Cup races. The series is open to yachts which enter the three races through the RSYS.
Going into the Milson Cup the Sydney 38 Wild One, skippered by CYCA member Larki Missiris, heads the pointscore with 3 points from Squadron boats Hell Razor (Ian MacDiarmid) on 6 points and Minerva (Tim and Edward Cox) on 7 points. Equal fourth on 9 points each, are Paul Clitheroe’s Balance and Geoff and Debbie Davidson’s Jackie Clare.
The Milson Cup is the ninth of 12 races in the Grant Thornton’s Short Ocean Pointscore, with only a handful of points separating the leading boats in both divisions and under both handicap systems.
In Division 1 IRC, Bob Steel’s Transpac 52 Quest has 10 points on the scoreboard, just ahead of the Ker 40 AFR Midnight Rambler on 12.3 points with Ray Entwistle’s J111 Jake third overall on 16 points.
Under PHS scoring, AFR Midnight Rambler has 20.1 points, Quest 21, with Tim Cox’s DK43 Minerva on 26.6, Warwick Sherman’s Occasional Coarse Language on 27 points and Jake fifth overall on 27 points.
Jake last weekend raced in the RSYS Division 1, scoring an impressive win on both PHS and IRC scoring.

In Division 2 PHS of the Short Ocean Pointscore, Outlandish (Sean Barrett) has a two point lead over Out of Sight (Matt Wilkinson) with just one point to Zephyr Hamilton Elevators (Alex Brandon).
Out of Sight heads the IRC scoring in Division 2, three points ahead of Zephyr Hamilton Elevators and Philip Bennett’s King Billy.
