Tony Lyall’s grand prix ocean racer Cougar II, heads a strong fleet of 21 yachts entered so far for the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s 89 nautical mile Bruny Island Race, with entries closing at noon next Wednesday, 8 February. The circumnavigation of Bruny Island, to the south of Hobart will start at 9.30am next Saturday 11 February, on the River Derwent off the Royal Hobart Regatta grounds, just south of the Tasman Bridge. The race is again starting there as a lead-up to the 174th Royal Hobart Regatta. This will be Couagar II’s first Bruny Island Race, having been bought by Lyall from its previous Victorian owner last December, just in time for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The TP52 finished 13th on line and 11th overall on IRC corrected time in the Sydney Hobart and has outsailed the local fleet in its two distance races so far. Several more entries are expected for what is Australia’s oldest annual offshore/inshore yacht race, first sailed in 1898 and, apart from the war years and early post-World War I years, has been held almost every year since then, still sailing the same course. The race officer will decide on the morning of the race whether to send the fleet on course, leaving Bruny Island on the port or starboard hand. Either way includes sailing through D’Entrecasteax Channel and out in the Tasman Sea, up or down the rugged seaward coastline of Bruny Island, passing historic Adventure Bay visited by so many early navigators on their voyages of exploration. In addition to Cougar II, entries include Don Calvert’s Castro 40 Intrigue which has won the Bruny Island Race eight times on corrected time between 1985 and 2011, and Sydney Hobart race competitors, Dump Truck (Justin Wells & Edward Fader) and Whistler (David Rees). Others already lining up for Tasmania’s most historical offshore race include Greg Prescott’s 2 Unlimited, Mark Ballard’s 40 South, Stewart Geeves’ Footloose, David Taylor’s Pisces, Wayne Banks-Smith’s War Games, Launceston to Hobart Race winner Masquerade (Tony Harman) and winner of the PHS division in the Bruny Island race last year, Paul Strong’s Youngsta. RYCT sailing manager Chris Oh today urged yacht owners to complete all mandatory safety regulations before Wednesday’s noon cut-off. 'The owner can do it in a few minutes on our web site, www.ryct.org.au, ' he said.
