True Blue Racing through to quarter finals of Warren Jones

'true Blue Racing at the Warren Jones Regatta - warren Jones Regatta'    Jordan Reece

True Blue Racing (TBR) has finished second at the end of the round robin stage. after a long day on the Swan River on day 3 of the 2012 Warren Jones Regatta.

The day started out very slow for all the teams with no wind, meaning postponement ashore. It wasn’t till 2:15pm that the race committee was able to send the teams out on the water with True Blue Racing up against over night leader David Gilmour. The race didn’t go TBR’s way with an early penalty going to Reece, from there the team consolidated the pre-start to manage an even start but Gilmour slowly pulled away to take the win.

The second race of the day saw TBR up against local Sydney rival Jay Griffin. An early penalty on Griffin saw the pressure fall off TBR. A good close race saw Griffin lead for the majority of the race but TBR rolled Griffin within 50 metres of the finish to take the win.

The team then had two flights off before the local duel between club mates Reece and Chapman, in what turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the round robin stage.

A close start saw Chapman to windward, a close upwind tacking duel saw the teams round within two boat lengths of each other with Chapman holding the lead. An early gybe out by Chapman allowed Reece a better run into the bottom mark and as they rounded the bottom mark Reece was less than a meter behind Chapman. With Chapman still holding the advantage TBR slipped back to about four lengths behind by half way up the second beat, but a good tactical call for the final half of the leg saw TBR gain with every tack. At the top mark Chapman dialed down True Blue Racing and managed to protect the right hand side.

With that Chapman rounded the top mark four seconds ahead but a great spinnaker set by True Blue Racing saw them in a good position to roll on the next gybe and that was exactly what they did. Chapman though, did a great job of staying in touch with Reece but with a obstruction on Reece’s bow and a call for water saw the tabled turn. A hard luff from Reece caught Chapman unaware and he failed to keep clear and was penalized. Reece was able to bear away and build speed quicker before crossing the line to take the win.

This saw True Blue Racing finish second after the round robin stages behind Gilmour.

'It was a really long day out there today, no breeze this morning then a good strong breeze this evening. We knew coming into the final match that we had secured a semi final berth if the race committee decided to skip the quarter finals but that didn’t dampen our efforts to win. We had a really good last race and it was great to come away with the win and finish second after the round robin stage. We have kind of battled our way through the round robin so I think we are looking for more consistant form heading into the knock out stages.' commented trimmer Arnau Farras-Knowles.

Tomorrow strong winds are expected with a cyclone sitting up north off Western Australia. However the race committee has decided to continue with the quarter finals.

David Gilmour chose to race eighth place Jay Griffin, True Blue Racing then chose seventh place Sam Gilmour for their quarter finals. Pete Nicholas chose Tristan Brown leaving fourth and fifth place Josh Junior and David Chapman for the final quarter final.

Racing will continue tomorrow at 9:30am with True Blue Racing up against Sam Gilmour, the quarter finals have been shortened from a best of five series to best of three.
