Warren Jones Regatta - True Blue Racing undefeated after opening day

'True Blue Racing at the Warren Jones Regatta - Warren Jones regatta'    Jordan Reece

Warren Jones International Regatta 2012 - True Blue Racing has set the early pace taking six wins from six starts to have a clear lead after the opening days competition. The day started with a strong easterly breeze around 22 knots with competitors sent out with the small jibs and reefed mainsails. True Blue Racing had a first flight bye match allowing the team to watch the others start off the regatta. True Blue Racing then stepped onto their Foundation 36 and produced six straight wins to come ashore at the end of the day undefeated.

When True Blue Racing did hit the water around 11am this morning, the breeze had already started to decrease with the teams first race against local sailor Tristan Brown in around 18 knots of wind. An early pre-start collision and penalty to Brown after he lost control of his bow in the dial up after entering from the starboard side, but the tables turned when a late racing call saw Brown cross the line a boat length ahead of TBR. The team played a safe game staying as close to Brown as possible, a small jump by Brown around the bottom mark saw him clear his penalty up the second windward beat but gave TBR the lead which they kept to the finish. With the breeze still dying the race committee decided to shake out the reef in the mains. Flight three saw TBR take a dominate start over Coltman from where they were able to protect the lead to the finish.

From there TBR took wins over Ichino from Japan, Sam Gilmour, Josh Junior and Pete Nicholas. The final flight saw Reece take a controlled pre-start over regatta favorite David Gilmour, the team protected the left side and had a commanding lead at the top mark but as Gilmour rounded the top mark the race was abandoned to the team surprise with a building sea breeze coming in at the bottom mark from the opposite. Although the match didnt count, True Blue Racing still came ashore happy with the days performance.

'We don’t do much big boat match racing so we are really enjoying racing here in Perth. We didn’t expect to have such a good opening day as we did, but we will take it while we can and hopefully will build throughout the week. We have taken some things away from today and know what areas we need to work on to keep improving which is good and we are looking forward to the rest of the weeks racing.' commented helmsman Jordan Reece.

Racing will continue tomorrow at 9:30am with True Blue Racing up against Gilmour and Griffin before a two flight break and one final match to close out the first round robin. Follow all the action live online with live coverage of the event over radio.
