Sail-World.com : Brass Monkey series Race 4 at Liverpool YC

Brass Monkey series Race 4 at Liverpool YC

'Liverpool Yacht Club Brass Monkey Series'    Liverpool Yacht Club

A light SSE wind pattern determined that it wasn’t going to easy to set good courses but Race Officers Dave Unthank and Tudor Goodman somehow contrived an extremely entertaining day’s sailing for our fleets of five Class 1 and eight Class 2 yachts.

A perfect start by Neil Thomas’s Mighty Max saw him off to a flyer with everyone in hot pursuit in a classic beat of all 13 yachts to G9; a reach to E2 and for Class 1 a spinnaker run down river against tide to G1, while Class 2 had a battle to G5, G7.

Approaching G1, the view from the deck of club flagship Gullmaren was again of a battle between to the two big hitters, Richard Booth’s Prima 38, Another Nods and Neil’s Mighty Max; Nods getting the line perfect at the mark gained boat lengths as Max struggled with some equipment problems at the foresail; the menacing Corby 29 0f Adam, Jon and (not to be left out) Mark Connolly, Easy Tiger rounding third with Jim Cartwright, at the helm of Daydream Believer today, not far adrift; Diva still experiencing teething troubles.

Meantime Steve Harrison’s Quattro had moved smoothly into a comfortable lead preceding the rest of the Sigma 33 fleet, Magic Moments, Saphoenix and Musketeer; Andy Freeney’s Mistoffelees close by across river to E4, ready for the long spinnaker run home; John Myerscough’s Starlight 30,Quilla and Paul Boycott’s Impala, Impact close to.

Dave Grey’s Sadler 25 Kahu gamely hanging in.Agreat spinnaker sail home saw Quattro line and winning honours from Magic Moments and Saphoenix with a dead heat between Musketeer and Mistoffelees at the line.

Class 1 line honours went to Nods followed by Max but by the slimmest of margins, one second!!, on corrected time, Easy Tiger snatched victory.

Many thanks to all who braved the cold and were rewarded with varied and imaginative racing.
