Sail-World.com : New Italian berthing tax offers a break for sailing boats

New Italian berthing tax offers a break for sailing boats

'Sailing Italy - now it’s going to cost more'    .

In introducing their new berthing surtax for yachts, the Italians have delivered a mini-coup to the sailing fraternity and the environment by halving the tax for sailing boats. The new tax, which is to come into play from 1st May this year, will be, for instance, five euro per day for a new sailing boat between 14 and 17 metres, but reduces to 3.5 euro if the same sailing boat is 10 years old.

Still, such a daily impost adds up after a couple of months, so if you are thinking or dreaming of sailing the Italian coastline any time soon, you will need to figure the tax into your costings – or drop Italy from your sailing route.

Much worse off are motorised superyachts. At this end of the scale, a superyacht of more than 64 metres will pay a whopping 703 euros a day.

Since the law, which has been on the drawing board for several months, was introduced just before Christmas, several megayacht organisations, including the gigantic Federagenti, which represents over 50 yachting companies, have made representations for an immediate review.

Some of the suggestions for amendment are to apply the surtax based on ownership and not on days in Italian waters; to limit the tax to Italian-flagged vessels only; and to exclude charter vessels.

Here are the daily surtax details to calculate your own potential cost:

5 euros per day for vessels from 10.01 to 12m;

8 euros per day for vessels from 12.01 to 14m;

10 euros per day for vessels from 14.01 to 17m;

30 euros per day for vessels from 17.01 to 24m;

90 euros per day for vessels from 24.01 to 34m;

207 euros per day for vessels from 34.01 to 44m;

372 euros per day for vessels from 44.01 to 54m;

521 euros per day for vessels from 54.01 to 64m;

703 euros per day for vessels larger than 64m.

Here are the breaks which will be good news for sailing boat owners:

1.  Vessels in dry dock or hauled out of the water are exempt from the daily fee;

2. For vessels older than 5, 10 or 15 years, the tax is reduced by 15 percent, 30 percent and 45 percent, respectively.

3. Sailing yachts’ fees are reduced by 50 percent.
