The 18th Singapore Straits Regatta (SSR) will take place 26-31 January 2012 in Singapore and Batam. This edition of the series is organised by the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club and hosted by ONE°15 Marina Club at Sentosa.

18 years ago the first Singapore Straits Regatta took place, with pioneers such as Changi Sailing Club, Nongsa Point Marina and Raffles Marina, coming together with Singapore Sailing Federation (then known as Singapore Yachting Association). And so began an annual tradition that endures to this day.

Last year saw the coming on board of ONE°15 and Marina at Keppel Bay to participate in organising the 17th SSR, with ONE°15 and Nongsa Point Marina as the hosting clubs.

The sailors to look out for in this year’s Singapore Straits Regatta are the ones who claimed podium positions in last year’s event. Gordon Maxted, who will be competing in the IRC B class, claimed the second overall position last year, despite breaking nearly everything on his boat - Young 84 Shoon Fung Too. Christopher Lim, who managed to score six wins in a row and on paper convincingly to take the title, will be the one to look out for in the one-design Platu class.

This year’s six-day event, which starts on Thursday 26th January evening with a cocktail reception at RSYC, has about 30 yachts signed up in the various IRC classes, one-design class and not forgetting the performance handicap class. Yacht sizes run from 24 feet to over 60 feet. As always, there will be established teams with elite crews as well as mavericks looking to upset the pecking order in Asian sailing. Whatever their competition credentials or lack of racing experience, the participants are sailing enthusiasts looking for a great time on water and on land!

A key highlight of this year's Straits Regatta will be the participation of our past SingaporeSailing Presidents. It’s all about banter such as 'don’t even think that we’ve lost it!' as ex-Presidents and the current President, race on board Magic Dragon 2 (owned by Ng Ser Miang, a former president of the Singapore Yachting Association) and Annette (owned by Anthony Lim, Changi Sailing Club's Commodore). These two teams will be led by Peter H L Lim, a former Singapore Yachting Association President and current SingaporeSailing Hon. Advisor, and Dr Ben Tan, current SingaporeSailing President. Their crews will comprise current and former national sailors, with the latter’s sailing heyday dating back to the 1970s.

The yachts will compete on a new course in Singapore waters, setting sail off East Coast Beach and racing towards ONE°15. Those on shore enjoying the sea view will see the fleet racing by. Let’s all wish for a good breeze! After that passage race, the yachts will cross over to Nongsa Point on Batam, Indonesia, for the final two days of racing set against some of the loveliest scenic views in the region. The racing crews and their supporters will have a welcome retreat at Nongsa from the hustle and bustle of Singapore's city life. Will there also be some respite from the nightlife of the preceding days? Knowing sailors, probably not as the partying is likely to continue.

This year’s Straits Regatta courses include three passage races created to ensure the highest level of competition. The northeast monsoon is expected to provide good winds.

Strongly supported by Neil Pryde Ltd and Fortis Hospitality Management, the Singapore Straits Regatta is a racing getaway that is as much about serious competition as it is about the lighthearted and relaxed camaraderie that the organisers have created around it.
