Canadian Sailing Team news from the IFDS World Championships

The IFDS Worlds in Port Charlotte are now in the history books and the competitors are transferring their equipment to Miami for OCR. The Canadian Sailing team sailors fared very well for this event, some were here for trials and some for more international experience.

Paul Tingley from RNSYS was on the podium with a third place overall for the event! Today he ended up seventh but at times during the race he had enough separation to get second place. With the 2.4 course location close to shore, the shifts were very unpredictable the results for many of the top competitors were all over the map. Paul had the most number of race wins in the series but the consistency of Damien Sequin (France) over the series gave him the overall win.

In the Skud Class, Ken Kelly and Brenda Hopkin of RVicYC, started getting their boat moving with another race of improving scores. The winners of the Skud18, two person, Canadian Paralympic trials however, are John McRoberts and Stacie Louttit, RVicYC. They finished fifth overall in the series. They now go on to Miami to sail against the European teams before they head home.

The Sonar team, lead by Bruce Millar, RVYC, had another very credible day. They finished fifth in the race and eighth overall in a very tight fleet. Throughout the series they had a number of top 5 races but were drawn back in the standings by 4 of the 10 races. Overall not bad though considering that the team has only been together for 4 months.

The 2013 IFDS Worlds will be held in Kinsale, Ireland but prior to that our Canadian team sailors will be heading to Europe this year as early as April. They will spend much of their summer there as they prepare for the 2012 Paralympic Games in early September.

Before we move to the next regatta, CYA Coach Manager, Brian Todd says ' we would be remise if we did not give a big Canadian cheer to the Volunteers from Port Charlotte YC and Punta Gorda Sailing Club with over 120 strong who put on an excellent event. We even had ex-CYA president Sicotte Hamilton, working on race committee.'
