The final day of racing for the 2012 KA Sails Australian Moth National Titles saw Nathan Outteridge dominate in the shifty conditions.

Conditions were much more subdued than previous days with 5-20 knots from the southwest. There were still some challenging waves toward the bottom of the course, however with four days of racing in conditions that can only be describe as extreme for moth sailing, today was much more manageable.
Race 11 varied between 5-15 knots with Peter Burling taking third, Rob Gough in second and Nathan Outteridge in first.
Race 12 increased with winds ranging from 10-20 knots from the south west. Rob Gough finished in third with Peter Burling in second and Nathan Outerridge finishing with his second win of the regatta.
When interviewed after the racing Outteridge said he ‘finally remembered how to sail’. After a busy campaign with his 49er this year Outteridge only managed a couple of days in his moth. Coming to terms with the waves took some time for him, but after changing to his larger foil for the final day his dominance showed through.
Rob Gough had an outstanding regatta showing superior skill to the rest of the fleet in some of the toughest conditions ever faced by a fleet of foiling moths. When interviewed after the race Gough said ‘We always have moth regattas in flat water, it’s great to mix it up. I love it!’
Scott Babbage did well to finish second after consistently scoring good results, with Nathan Outteridge coming through to take third with his two wins on the final day.
Mornington Yacht Club has done an outstanding job running a very rough and windy regatta. Although the fleet is bruised and tired and looking forward to getting back to their home waters, which are mostly flat water, many valuable lessons have been learnt about sailing moths in rougher conditions.
