Temptress Ray Godwin's Farr 40 from the LBYC, ran down the smaller slower boats to take first place Sunday in the 2012 Two Gates Pursuit Race hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club.
A pursuit race is where all boats race each other based on their PHRF handicap rating… but in a reverse start. The slowest boats start first and it moves up the ladder until you get to the big boats. In some cases the bigger boats gave more than an hour of time to the smaller boats but still caught them at the end of the 13.2 nautical mile course.
Prior to the race, the skippers of the smaller boats were of the opinion that if the breeze blew hard throughout the day they stood a good chance of staying ahead of everyone. But the wind gods didn’t cooperate, showing the fleet only 4-6 knots of breeze at the start, building to 11-12 knots over by Los Angeles Harbor but back down to the mid-single digits by the finish.
Second place went to Peter Tong, LBYC and his Santa Cruz 70, OEX, which was hot on Godwin’s heels but couldn’t quite pull it off the pass. Bob Lane, LBYC, and his Andrews 63, Medicine Man, finished third with John Sangmeister (LBYC) and Jay Steinbeck (CYC) and their ProSail 40 catamaran, Gladstone’s Long Beach finished fourth. Finishing in fifth was Jeff Shew and Bill Durant, LBYC, and their Farr 40, Viva La Vida with sixth place going to Gordon Leon, CBYC, and his Farr 40, Foil.
'This was a great race and I’m glad you held it,' said Leon. 'As we caught up to the smaller boats we saw a couple of Cal 25s in their own battle. It was a fun race.'
LBYC re-invented the their long-standing Two Gates Invitational race and turned it into a pursuit race. But they didn’t change the course which starts in Long Beach Harbor, takes the boats up to Los Angeles Harbor and then back in to Long Beach for the finish. It gets its name from the fact that the race boats weave in and out of Long Beach’s Queen’s Gate harbor entrance and Los Angeles’ Angel’s Gate harbor entrance.
