Flying Fifteen National Championship - Today’s invitation race started shortly after the arrival of Perth’s famous 'Fremantle Doctor', a south westerly sea breeze that for most of the summer, keeps city temperatures bearable during the afternoons.
Two of the visiting world champions stamped their authority on the event from the word go, though not without some pressure from the locals. Alan Bax was the first to finish, followed closely by Adam Hawkins/Ben Jones, sailing No Bull, but the latter crossed the start line early, handing second place to triple world champion Steve Goacher, who is sailing with Simon Childs at the front.
John Wilson and Nick Hancock handled the heavy going well, to edge out former British world champions Mike Hart and Richard Rigg. The diminutive Chris Paterson, sailing with Rupert Leslie made a successful transition from his foiling moth to push Mike Hart all the way, while Adele Jackson recovered well from dropping a heap of places after a horrendous top mark rounding in heavy traffic after the first beat.
Added spice came today in the form of a fleet of Hobie cats racing from the adjacent Nedlands Yacht Club, seemingly unaware that they were crossing the championship course.
With the 'pecking order' now established, all is poised for an interesting week of competition, with the next day or two promising similar conditions before breezes drop off towards the end of the week.
