33rd Nacra Nationals - Day 1

'Looking to the picturesque waters of Largs Bay - 33rd Nacra Nationals'    Nacra Australia
The 33rd Nacra National titles commenced yesterday at Largs Bay Sailing Club, South Australia.

Day 1 of racing saw a morning invitation race followed by two races in the afternoon session. The hot conditions that have been affecting Adelaide made conditions on the water, more difficult that the picturesque location would suggest.

Racing is across three fleets with the F18s, having the largest number of competitors and some relatively close racing. In the first of the afternoon races Whitsunday Sailing Club’s Dale Mitchell took the win from Mick Guinea of Townsville with, Luke McMullen of Port Douglas third. As the wind built for the second race it also clocked further left towards the west. Mick Guinea took the win in the second race followed by Dale Mitchell then Mal Richardson from Port Douglas.

In the 16sq fleet racing was also quite close. Race 1 went to Warren Guinea of Brisbane, followed by Ross Guinea and Jared Potter of Bundaberg. In race 2 Jared pipped Warren for the victory with Ross Guinea in third.

Last year’s national champions in the 5.8 fleet are shaping up as the team to beat again. Matthew Caldwell and Bruce Potter of Bundaberg took both races. Shane Russell of Newcastle also proved consistent placing second in both races.

Racing continues today with two morning races followed by two afternoon races. The regatta wraps up on Saturday the seventh when the 2012 Nacra Australian Champions will be crowned.
