Sail Sydney Laser 4.7 title to Sophie Chesterman

'Sophie Chesterman racing over the weekend - Sail Sydney 2011'    Richard Scarr

Sail Sydney was held from 16th to 18th December. Today racing was sailed in fresh sailing conditions on Botany Bay.

Hobart sailor Sophie Chesterman today comfortably won the Laser 4.7 class at the regatta on a day that saw three Tasmanians notch up heat wins.

Chesterman, representing the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, extended her overnight lead with a 6-1-4 scorecard in the building 12-20 knot north-easterly sea breeze.

With three wins, two seconds and a third place in the nine race regatta, she finished with a net 19 points, 12 points clear of her nearest rival, NSW sailor Joshua Dawson on 31 points.

Fellow RYCT Dinghy Group member Jock Calvert finished the regatta with a second and a first, for a net 34 points. He started with a 1-2-3 score on Friday, but mid-fleet finishes on Saturday cost him a higher overall place.

The stronger winds today did not suit Anna Vaughan, but she still managed a fourth place in heat seven to finish sixth overall on 53 points and second placed girl in the 22 boat fleet.

The other Tasmanians in the Laser 4.7 class, Madaline Salter finished 14th overall and Madeline Davies 19th.

After three thirds and three fourth places, Hugh Jones finally got into the groove in today’s fresh breeze, scoring three straight wins in the Techno 293 sailboard class to finish a close third overall to NSW sailor Antoine King.

In the Sabot one-up class Dinghy Group sailor Gabriel Morrison today had placings of 11th, fourth and sixth to finish a close fifth overall in the NSW-dominated class.

Fellow RYCT sailors Edmund Hargreaves, Morgan Davies, Lachlan Hargreaves and Angus Calvert finished 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th overall.

In the Laser Radial class, Emma Barton finished sixth overall and Amelia Catt seventh overall against stronger male opposition.
