In the inaugural December Match Race, first place honors went to Bill Durant who edged out his son Dustin in the ISAF Grade 5 event hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club.
The double round robin format hosted four west coast match racing teams; Dave Hood, Long Beach; Bruce Stone, San Francisco; Bill Durant, Long Beach and Bill’s son Dustin Durant who goes by 'Dusty'. Dusty is quite an accomplished match racer in his own right and finished second to his dad in the sunny but cool conditions that never saw more than ten knots of breeze.
Dominating the event by winning eleven of his twelve scheduled races, Bill’s tactics were nearly unbeatable, owing in no small way to his tactician, three-time US Sailing National Champion Chris Raab whose instructions were clearly heard… even if you weren’t on the boat.
Both days dawned with fluky and light breeze that eventually settled in to the normal Long Beach south westerly’s we’re used to. But on Sunday when the wind clocked over to its groove of 210 degrees it built from six to ten knots giving the competitors a little more boat speed and a little more action.
'Boy the action really dialed up today,' Bill said. 'That was great racing and it was special racing Dusty. He did really well out there in getting second place.'
Active Catalina 37 racer, club board member and our 2012 Port Captain Dave Hood put this match race weekend together so that teams wanting to compete in the California Dreamin’ Series could get more match race experience on the famed 37s… and hopefully a shot at the Ficker Cup and maybe even the Congressional Cup.
Hood finished third in the event and felt the weekend was an all-around success and hopes to duplicate this event sometime in February.
'We all need more time in these boats,' Hood said, 'and I’d like to do this at least once more before the California Dreamin’ Series starts.'
The fourth team was skippered by San Francisco native Bruce Stone who brought his match race experience in both the Butler Cup and the Ficker Cup to the regatta but struggled all weekend in the shifty breeze.
