With the close of entries just a week away for the Pittwater & Coffs Harbour Regatta 2012, entries are rolling in for another spectacular start, report the host club The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.

From Brighton in the South to Hamilton Island in the North they’re coming to join in the 2012 regatta. With over 40 entries to date, the fleet is building nicely and with the traditional last week rush, many more are expected as the deadline draws near. There is an encouraging 12 new entries to the regatta or 'Coffs virgins'.

One of these is long time ocean racer Jack Goluzd’s recently purchased Melson Marek 35 ‘Bling’. Goluzd has completed many Kenwood Cups, Admiral's Cup , Southern Cross’, 29 Hobarts and 3 Coffs races with two on ‘Sledgehammer’ and one on the TP52 ‘Quest’ in 2011. However, this will be his first Coffs race in his own boat.

He will have 4 young RPAYC sailors including his son Chris, his girlfriend and sailing partner Sarah Lee (29'er NSW Champions 2011) at the helm and 23 year old intermediate member Tim Lake, in addition to Keirin Searle off ‘Ragamuffin’ and a few mates off ‘Quest’ making up the crew of 8.

The boat is currently in transit from the UK where it was purchased and Goluzd is hopeful the late arrival will not hinder their preparations for the race. With the Coffs race their main focus they will follow that campaign up with the Sydney Harbour regatta, Port Stephens and Airlie/Hamilton Island race weeks in August.

Goluzd said, 'This is the first racing boat I have owned after sailing many years on others, so I am pretty excited about the new toy with its 'turbo' refit and new sail wardrobe. We can’t wait to race in the Pittwater & Coffs Harbour regatta and we hope for similar conditions we experienced last year, it would be great for the boat which has done 22+ knots on a reach.'

Bling is a sister ship to the RPAYC yacht 'The Real Thing', the current PHS regatta champion.

And whilst not a new boy to the Coffs race, Bob Cox’s recently purchased DK46 now carries the name of his successful NS 369 'Nine Dragons'. The DK46 is a significant step up for the owner and crew; and the Coffs Harbour race will be its first major test. They were reasonably comfortable on the NS 369 offshore, and were delighted with her podium finishes in the 2010 / 2011 Coffs races. Said Cox, 'We hope we can manage the power of the DK46 and will do our best to have an enjoyable and safe race in 2012.' They will be up against another DK46 also from Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Rob Reynolds ‘Exile’.

A Cat Two event, the 226nm Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Ocean race will be the first race of the new year and newly named regatta, when it gets underway on the 2nd January 2012 at 1pm.

The five race regatta kicks off with the Pittwater to Coffs Race followed by two sprint and two 20nm offshore races in Coffs Harbour on fifth and 6th January to round out the regatta. The Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race offers IRC, ORCI, PHS and shorthanded Divisions and the inaugural Australian Performance Handicap (PHS) Championship will be running in parallel to the regatta. To date, 20 boats have entered the PHS Championships.

The receiving Club, the Coffs Harbour Yacht Club have been very busy in preparations for the event to accommodate the marquee, stage and flooring where much of the post race celebrations will take place. A Wild Oats wine bar will be set up to coincide with the Mayoral reception and passage race prize giving on the 4th January.

In addition, there has been much planning for daily sightseeing tours to entertain the partners and families during the day. The full program and booking form is available on the event website at www.pittwatertocoffs.com.au

The regatta celebrations will kick off with a bang with a huge New Years Eve Party at The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on 31st December for its members and visiting competitors. There will be fireworks over Pittwater at 9am and midnight. This will be followed by a welcome cocktail party and mandatory race briefing on the 1st January before the start of the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour offshore race the following day.

RPAYC Club volunteers will act as ambassadors for visiting yachts when they arrive to berth their yacht prior to the start of the Pittwater to Coffs race. The ambassador will greet them at their berth at the RPAYC marina and will liaise with the skipper and crew and address any needs they may have.

Chair of the Coffs Organising Committee Richard Hudson , said, 'We’re pleased to offer this service to our visiting competitors. The aim of the service provided by Club volunteers is to assist our visitors so that they enjoy the facilities of the RPAYC, know where everything is, what services are available and generally assist with their needs. Not only that they will be able to help with local area information and directions and what’s going at the Club.'

Regatta merchandise is also now available to order online from the event website www.pittwatertocoffs.com.au
Close of Entries is next Friday 2 December 2011.

The notice of race and online entry for both the Pittwater & Coffs Harbour regatta and the Australian Performance Handicap (PHS) Championships is available from the event website at www.pittwatertocoffs.com.au
