Gold Coast business identity David White has been elected President of the Marine Action Group (MAG) at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting.
He takes over from outgoing President Keith Douglas who stood down on announcing his candidacy for Gold Coast Mayor.
David said his first order of business will be to strenuously pursue MAG’s interests in the future of Tipplers Resort. 'I have serious concerns over misleading statements about MAG and Tipplers made in council 10 October. These statements require careful examination as they influenced the council vote. It has been suggested there may well be grounds for referral to the Crime and Misconduct Commission.' he said.
'If, as seems the case, councillors were unfairly influenced by these claims, then these allegations will need to be addressed before any further decisions can be considered on the future of Tipplers,' he added.
David vowed to continue the fight that the Marine Action Group has waged against the council over the purchase of the iconic boatie haven and believes the Tipplers acquisition was made by a 'grossly incompetent council' in a decision that is contrary to the public interest.
'This council has taken no notice of what the Gold Coast ratepayers have clearly stated they want. Instead, council has marched blindly on attempting to stonewall all efforts that MAG has made in putting forward a not-for-profit plan to restore Tipplers at minimum cost to the ratepayers,' he said.
MAG’s plan has been developed by a group of experienced Gold Coast business operators solely to ensure Tipplers is returned to the people. They allege that the Tipplers issue has wasted and will continue to waste ratepayer’s money and that an outraged public is looking forward to the council elections next March to resolve the issue.
MAG urges all the current councillors to carefully consider the seriousness consequences of this issue and vote at the next council meeting to defer any decision on the future of Tipplers until after the election.
In a closing statement, David said 'Any further ill-advised and ill-informed decisions by the present council to demolish Tipplers and summarily brush aside the MAG plan in light of a potential CMC referral could prove to be the key that unlocks a Pandora’s box.'
