US Olympic Team Qualifier - Genny Tulloch leads after first round

At the U.S. Olympic Team Qualifying Regatta, Genny Tulloch’s team won all of their matches (7-0) and lead the competition after round one.

'We feel really good about the day,' said Tulloch moments after arriving at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club dock. 'We had a lot of close races, and especially two close races: one against Anna (Tunnicliffe) and one against Sally (Barkow). 'There were lead changes downwind, but in each we were able to draw penalties and lead after the penalties.'

Tulloch, Barkow and Tunnicliffe – all members of US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics – train full-time and it showed on the water when they matched up.

'We had a tacking duel against both teams where we probably had 50 tacks up the beat,' said Tulloch, who sails with Jenn Chamberlin and Alice Manard Leonard. 'Then we’d go into a close downwind, then a close upwind, and then downwind. They were full-on mental challenges as well as physical challenges.'

Tunnicliffe’s team – Team Maclaren with Molly Vandemoer and Debbie Capozzi – only dropped the one match to Tulloch and finished the day six wins, one loss.

Sally Barkow, who sails as Team 7 Match Race with Elizabeth Kratzig-Burnham and Alana O’Reilly, was defeated by Tunnicliffe’s team to end the day with five wins, two losses.

Biscayne Bay is ideal for match racing in the fall and today’s conditions didn’t disappoint with the wind ranging from 12-15 all day. The temperatures, however, were very hot.

'At the end of some of the races we were dying sweating and all we could think about was getting water and rehydrate and cool down,' explained Tulloch.

The original schedule showed six flights of the first round robin; however the Key Biscayne Yacht Club’s Race Committee opted to run all 10 flights to complete the round robin.

Event chairman Ron Drucker explained the decision. 'We’re really concerned with the weather and the chance of the approaching hurricane changing our plans for us. We fully intend to go out and watch the weather as we go forward. We followed the safe course and completed the first round robin to complete the series.'

Provisional Round Robin 1 results:

1. Genny Tulloch 7–0
2. Anna Tunnicliffe 6–1
3. Sally Barkow 5–2
4. Stephanie Roble 4–3
5. Becca Dellenbaugh 3–4
6. Maegan Ruhlman 2–5
7. Kaity Storck 1–6
8. Sandy Hayes 0–7

Racing continues daily through Sunday, Oct. 30.
