Hobart Junior sailors were treated to a weekend enjoying the thrills of skiff sailing during an introductory skiff sailing weekend on October 15-16, held at Kingston Beach Sailing Club.

The club primarily sails sabots and mirrors and were very keen to explore pathways to provide both development and fun for sailors coming through their classes.

The initiative, dubbed the 'Tasmanian Skiff Pathways Program' is a joint program organised by the Tasmanian Flying 11 and B14 Associations as well as several interested 29er sailors and aimed to showcase the potential progression through these exciting boats.

Members from Midway Point Yacht Club, Tamar Yacht Club, Leven Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania provided boats and assistance and it is hoped that with the formation of a 'Tassie Skiffs' committee, a travelling skiff series for their classes may be developed next season involving interested clubs and linking current major dinghy regattas.

Despite icy, at times soaking wet and gusty Derwent spring weather, the weekend was a great success and a further weekend at Kingston Beach is planned next weekend providing coached training for the B14 class. Additional try skiff days are being discussed and will be announced in the near future.

'Both the Kingston Beach Sailing Club and the Tassie Skiffs committee were excited to see where the program could go in the future and were delighted with the response this weekend, especially despite the bad weather', said Tassie Skiff Spokesman Adrian Beswick.

'We strongly believe that being able to sail with a friend, sibling or parent is very much a part of sailing, and the fun, skills and teamwork developed in sailing three sail boats will allow sailors to take any sailing pathway from teenagers through to adults. '

The face of the Tasmanian Skiff Pathways Program, Adrian Beswick was also the past Co Founder of the Strait4devils Appeal that raised money for the Tasmanian Devils Appeal by crossing Bass Strait in March 2009 in his B14 Skiff.
