China Coast Race Week entry EFG Bank Mandrake, a Mills 40 Design co-owned by Nick Burns and Fred Kinmonth, was built in 2005 and won most of her races under the name of Tiamat in her first year, before moving to the Mediterranean as Ngoni and continuing her form. The boat was purchased and renamed in time to successfully compete for Hong Kong in the 2010 Rolex Commodores Cup and has since enjoyed a host of victories both internationally and regionally.
'She is very fast and competitive' says Nick Burns who is looking forward to 'great racing and great competition at one of the best regattas in Asia'. While she is light at six tons and performs best in light winds, 'we have set up the boat for relatively strong winds and hope that these materialise' adds Burns.
35 boats have entered the China Coast Regatta, a taxing three-day event in the waters off RHKYC’s Middle Island clubhouse starting on Friday 14 October. The boats are divided into five divisions (IRC Racing Divisions 0, 1, and 2, Cruising and HKPN) with the biggest fleet of boats being IRC Racing Division 1 where 13 boats are competing.
EFG Bank Mandrake is one of these boats but she is more focused on two (friendly) adversaries in particular… 'we have very solid competition in the 40’ Class, which is a great challenge' says Burns who adds 'two boats in particular, Blondie IV and Ambush are also designed by Mark Mills meaning they are almost identical in their performance so offer a particular challenge.' This is a sentiment echoed by Ambush co-owner Joachim Isler.
On board for China Coast Race Week is EFG Mandrake’s core crew, many of whom sailed in the challenge for the Rolex Commodores Cup in Cowes last year. All crew members are amateur sailors who regard their sailing as a sport and who hold down full time jobs.
EFG Bank Mandrake has set her sights on winning her class in both the China Coast Regatta and the VinaCapital Hong Kong to Vietnam Race (starts 19 October) which together comprise RHKYC’s China Coast Race Week.
