ZOKE Kiwi Match fail to Fire in Bermuda

'jury 1 - Bermuda Gold Cup'    Chris Davies

Logan Fraser of the Zoke Kiwi Match team provides this update from the Argo Group Gold Cup, being sailed in Bermuda. The event is an ISAF Grade 1 event, and is part of the World Match Racing Tour.

We always knew it was going to be tough racing in Bermuda, our first World Tour Event of the year. We were hoping to walk away with a solid outcome, but unfortunately the task was a little beyond us. The Bermuda Gold Cup is renowned for its cut throat format combined with a challengingly different boat in the International One Design, the level required to do well here is always extremely high.

With 24 of the world’s best match racing teams competing in Bermuda there was never going to be an easy pass into the Semi Finals. Our group was definitely one of the tougher ones, however, including Ian Williams, Mathieu Richard and Damien Iehl, all sailing at the top of their game this season.

The format has no allowance for a slow start and regrettably, on day 1 of our group sailing, that is exactly what we had. Our focus was perhaps a little to much on getting our heads around the different style of boat which lead us to make some unforced match racing errors. All our races were close, but at this level, no mistake goes unpunished. We did manage to pick up our game on day 2, though, to chalk up a couple of wins, eventually finishing sixth in our pool.

The next couple of days will be spent enjoying the local island hospitality and having a look around the beautiful island of Bermuda. We then have to high-tail it to the other side of the world for our next event, the Monsoon Cup Qualifier in Malaysia.

Be sure to check out live coverage of the Bermuda Gold Cup Finals on the World Match Racing Tour website www.wmrt.com as well as the daily morning and afternoon shows. More info can also be found on our team website www.kiwimatch-sailing.com with our twitter feed, photos and videos and remember to follow the link to join our Facebook page.

Thanks again to our principal sponsor ZOKE, for making it possible for us to be here and our family, friends and fans for all their support.
