Corsair Seawind Australian Multihull Championships - Skippers and crews will line up for a totally different tactical challenge when they contest the two important windward/leeward races in the Corsair Marine/Seawind Australian Multihull championship on Moreton Bay later today.
Wind speed recorders at Cape Moreton and Peel Island suggest that the races will be contested in moderate Southerly winds which will be a welcome change when a 26knot sea breeze played a major role in sorting the heavy wind sailing specialists from the rest on Tuesday. The courses set in the open water East of Green and St Helena Islands will present the 25 yacht fleet representing South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland with another supreme test of tactical racing.
While the new breeze offers a different challenge for skippers, tacticians and crew it is not expected to present any changes to the inform sailing combination of the Keith Glover skippered trimaran Trilogy which leads the Division One championship with a perfect 1-1-1 score over the speedy Victorian catamaran Mad Max 2-4-4 and the Sunshine Coast catamaran Hot Vindaloo 6-3-2.
This trio of talented crews are again expected to dominate the results today with the recent speed sailing modifications of a canting mast and new square-top mainsail promising to produce the speed for Trilogy to wrap up the championship.
But the George Owen skippered Mad Max and the Julian Griffiths helmed Hot Vindaloo will be equally determined to break the Trilogy crew and their vice like grip on the championship trophy.
Sole female skipper Linda Renouf and her crew manning the sail controls of the Corsair 750 Dash can expect to face a similar challenge against their narrow three point lead in the Division Two class.
Dash with a consistent score of 3-1-2 only needs to finish ahead of the Stephen Fishley helmed Frassid 1-3-5 and the Peter Hackett skippered Intrigued 2-5-3 to lay a positive claim towards winning the class championship with a day to spare.
Division Three championship leader Phil Day and his Rhythmic crew are also in a commanding position to win their series over the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron courses today. Rhythmic has won all three races which suggest both skipper and crew could also win their class with a day to spare.
