Following the Boating Industries Alliance of Australia Board meeting, held in Brisbane to further discuss the outcomes of the Marine Industry Summit, a number of national initiatives were approved. Boating Lifestyle Promotion
Approval was given to seek to establish a national boating lifestyle campaign similar to campaigns operating in the caravan and camping industry and others which actively promote the benefits of the marine based recreation to the community. It is proposed that this promotion be operated by a specific dedicated entity and modelled on the current style of Discover Boating campaign operating in a number of countries internationally. Further detailed discussions are being scheduled with a range of key industry stakeholders to bring this into reality as soon as possible. Further member briefings on this initiative will occur in the near future to enable member input into the proposal. Marine Queensland will facilitate these sessions with its members after the Brisbane Boat Show. Grey and Parallel Imports
A three pronged approach to this issue has been initiated. This includes:
• Compliance - the BIAA is increasing its interaction with relevant Federal Government Agencies to ensure that relevant standards such as electrical compliance, C-tick compliance, emissions compliance, etc., are being adequately enforced at the point of entry and at other relevant control points such as the point of registration.
• Consumer education and awareness - increasing the level of consumer education and awareness of their rights and responsibilities when purchasing privately imported vessels or second hand vessels imported from overseas. These elements include their rights under the Australian Consumer law, compliance requirements for vessels and marine equipment, general safety obligations and related issues.
• Regulatory reform - Marine Queensland is facilitating a meeting with relevant Federal Government political figures to advance a regulatory reform agenda for the short to medium term.
The BIAA is implementing a range of initiatives to enhance communications with members including national e-news briefings on national issues, face-to-face member briefings, attendance by the BIAA GM at relevant Divisional meetings to provide first hand briefings, etc. There is a high level of commitment to seeking members views and input into the activities of the State and national Associations to ensure that members needs and views are addressed for the overall benefit of the industry.
As part of the enhanced member communications, detailed information is to be provided on current progress with issues such as marine park proposals under the national Bioregional Planning Processes, red tape reductions campaigns on behalf of the industry nationally in respect to government related impacts on the industry and its future development, opportunities for enhanced efficiencies and cost reductions on the national boat show program and related issues.
