The Showdown 2011 annual spring regatta on Hobart’s River Derwent, organised by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, is being held over the weekend of Friday 4 to Sunday 6 November.
The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania is extending an invitation to mainland and northern Tasmanian yacht owners and their crews to enjoy a weekend of regatta racing on Hobart’s broad River Derwent, a waterway virtually clear of commercial traffic.
The regatta comprises fleet racing for keelboats, sportsboats, trailables and multihulls, and class or yardstick racing for all the off-the-beach class dinghies raced in Tasmanian waters, including international youth classes.
RYCT sailing manager Richard Scarr is asking local yachtsmen who don’t plan to race their boat in The Showdown to consider making it available for charter to keelboat crews from the mainland or northern Tasmanian clubs.
'We can organise charters for any skippers and their crews interested in flying down for some exciting regatta sailing on the River Derwent on a competitive local yacht,' Scarr said. 'We will extend the invitation to keelboat skippers and crews from clubs in the north of Tasmania.
'Mid-river fleet racing on the Derwent is brilliant, with little or no commercial traffic and good sea breezes. Racing will start with a late afternoon twilight event on the Friday and continue with back-to-back fleet races on the Saturday and Sunday,' he added.
The Showdown attracts a large range of centreboard classes, with strong fleets of Laser 4.7, Mirror, International Cadet, Sabot and Optimist dinghies and sailboards. This year’s fleet will include Laser 4.7 and Cadet sailors who have recently contested world championship regattas overseas.
The Club is confident of an increase in keelboat and sportsboat entries, with a boost in the SB3 fleet and renewed interest in keelboat racing predicted for the coming season with the introduction of the new Combined Clubs racing.
A fleet of at least nine SB3s is expected for The Showdown with competition heightened following the good performances of several Hobart crews in the recent Hamilton Island Race Week. Sprint series races will be provided for the SB3s.
The off-the-beach classes will contest a series of back-to-back races on the Saturday and Sunday.
