The Beneteau 36.7 North American Championship’s opening reception was held Wednesday night at the Toronto Downtown Hilton Hotel. The event was hosted by Mike Sonosky and Richard Reid, members of the organizing committee, who had the pleasure of introducing special guest Dr. Leroy McClean, Consulate-General of Barbados – the title sponsor of this year’s championship.
This year’s race, taking place September 8-11th, marks the 10th anniversary of this North American class regatta and the first time the event has been held in Canada. The four-day event regatta is taking place at the National Yacht Club in Toronto and will feature a Barbadian theme with island music and food.
Also honoured at the reception was Don Finkle from RCR Yachts and the Youngstown Yacht Club. Don is not only a fierce competitor on the race course but, as Richard Reid noted, he was also responsible for starting the 36.7 class, shepherding in and developing the class rules, creating fairness on race course and hosting a fantastic regatta. Don was very appreciative of the acknowledgement and the gift and said he was looking forward to coming back on the podium on Sunday to be acknowledged again and to pick up a trophy.
