Doug Kerr to skipper Yachting WA

Lifelong sailor and experienced helmsman Doug Kerr last week committed to skipper Yachting WA as President.

In thanking outgoing President John McQueen before a gathered group of staunch Club Delegates at the Yachting WA Annual General Meeting, Doug confirmed that the Board is well advanced in developing a new strategic plan. An outline encompassing its key objectives and initiatives was presented.

John McQueen whose expertise lies in the area of race management has been a member of the Board of Management for nine years, three of those in the capacity of Vice President to Alan Tough and three in the role of President.

Giving thanks, John spoke highly of the Club support enjoyed in Western Australia 'The strength of sailing and boating in WA is dependent on the activities of clubs and associations. They are active throughout the state and the support of smaller and regional clubs remains a priority of the Board. The level of co-operation and communication between Clubs is outstanding and I would like to thank all Commodores, Flag Officers and Managers and their management committees for the support they provide to Yachting WA and I am sure that this collaboration and goodwill will continue into the future'.

Doug Kerr nominated to the Board of Management in August 2009, is a Fellow of Australian Society of Practicing Accountants has been involved in the motor industry since 1969. Doug’s interest in sailing has spanned a period of 54 years. He commenced sailing Pelicans in 1957 moving through the classes of National Cadet Dinghy, Moth, 16’ Skiff and Soling.

In 1977 Doug gained selection as crew on the America’s Cup contender 'Australia' but due to ill health, had to withdraw a day before departure. Doug is now an Etchell sailor who in January 2009 finished 15th in the Etchells National Championships in Adelaide.

Apart from sailing, Doug, a member of Royal Perth Yacht Club and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, also enjoys his powerboats a Riveria The Plum and a Southwind Centre Console. Doug is supported by Vice President Denys Pearce (RPYC), Alan John (PFSYC), Ron Packer (RFBYC), Treasurer, John Heydon (SoPYC), Phil Lammonby (SoPYC), Graham White (RPYC), Mark Donati (RFBYC & CPYC), Jim Suffield (HYC) and incoming Board Member Mark Fitzhardinge (RPYC) who has filled the vacancy created by the election of Denys Pearce to Vice President.
