Turtle breeding season approaches - tourists urged to lend a hand

'Loggerhead turtle'    .

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is calling for volunteers to help during the turtle hatching season at Mon Repos, near Bundaberg.

Jobs include helping rangers with turtle research and visitor groups and conducting children's activities.

Ranger Lisa Emmert says volunteers are essential to the success of the season.

'The tourist numbers get up to around 300 people per night, so the heaviest part of the season is through December and January,' she said.

'We're looking at thousands of visitors each season.

'We actually teach them [volunteers] how to work the shop because that's part of their duties.

'We teach them about the turtle biology and the conservation work that we do here and just get them familiar with the nightly activities.'

Turtle season runs from November until the end of March.

Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting sea turtles on the Australian east coast and is the largest mainland turtle rookery in the southern hemisphere.

DERM rangers, researchers and volunteers take people on night-time tours from November to March each year to watch this wildlife phenomenon. Tours operate seven nights a week from 7pm, until late March.

The beach and surrounding area are in good condition following the recent floods and tourists are welcome.

Bookings can be made online at www.bookbundabergregion.com.au or by calling (07) 4153 8888.

Applications close next week.
