Remembering past Olympian Vernon Stratton
'Vernon Stratton'
In memory of Vernon Stratton.
It is with great sadness that the RYA reports the passing of former Olympic sailor Vernon Stratton who died suddenly in hospital last Saturday, 20th August at the age of 83.
Vernon Stratton was a huge inspiration in the sailing world. He represented GBR at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games in the Finn class and also won the Finn Gold Cup in the same year. He was British Olympic sailing team manager in 1968, 1972 and 1980.
After Finns, Vernon went on to sail in the Star class for more than a decade. He later moved onto Bembridge Redwings and Illusions. Last year he was presented with an RYA Lifetime Achievement Award by HRH the Princess Royal. Vernon was also very well known in the world of Advertising and as a top human-interest photographer.
