The Verve Cup 2011 is now underway at Chicago Yacht Club and in the first day of action on the water, the circles were each able to get in three races.

The race committee postponed the start for nearly an hour waiting for the wind to build. The wind was east to east southeast most of the day, building slightly from three to five, to seven to nine.

PRO reports, Circle A: Circle A saw three good races with very tight racing especially among the Farr 40’s. Only six points separate the top five boats in the Farr 40 division. Race one saw a course change due to a wind shift to the left, but otherwise enjoyed fairly consistent breezes throughout the racing.

Circle B: Three good races were held on Circle B. Two races had a wind change and were altered at the leeward mark. Light breezes were consistent throughout the day. All fleets raced on the same course. Competitive racing was apparent and enjoyed on Circle B.

Circle C: Three lively races were held on Circle C. Only one race needed a course correction. Breezes were seven to nine knots throughout the day, easterly to southeasterly. Three fleets, J-105’s, T-10’s and the Orr 3’s all raced the long course, 1.25kn, and the smaller boats raced the short course of 1.00kn. The finishes provided excitement for the race committee signal boat.

Chris Bedford of Sailing Weather Services told racers that weather conditions expected for tomorrow include a front in the morning with the possibility of rain and isolated storms. The rain is expected to pass in the morning and clear up.
