Ronstan A-Class Catamaran World Championships - Australians lead

'Ronstan A-Class Catamaran World Championship 2011 day 2'    Kristoffer West

Ronstan A-Class Catamaran World Championships, organised by Sailing Aarhus in association with Kaløvig Sailing Center, are underway in Aarhus, Denmark.

The first race day was sunny, with a light breeze from west; shortly before the start, however, the wind died down and Principal Race Officer Andreas Kuchler wisely chose to set the postponement pennant. After a brief pause, the wind came back; this time from the south, however.

The starting sequence was reset and the first race went perfectly, with a fully clean starting line and no recalls. However, after the first boats had reached the top mark, the wind turned back to the west and increased to 20 knots. It was now beam reach, which is something of a challenge in so much wind in an A-Cat. Sensibly enough, the race was abandoned by the race management.

The wind fell again to approximately 5m/s, and a new race was started. The sailors were keen to get going, so the black flag was set in order to get the cats off. The wind was tricky, and the sailors needed to be on top of their game in order to cope with all the shifts.

After two races, Scott Anderson (AUS) was leading in front of Steve Brewin (AUS) and Jack Benson (AUS).

Day two
Day two started out with nice sunshine and a breeze of approximately 10 knots. The competitors were again eager to get started, and once again PRO Andreas Kuchler had to use the black flag in order to get a decent start. There was a big advantage on the starboard side of the race course, so all those who had chosen this side had a good lead at the first mark. But again the conditions were challenging, with many wind shifts, so the benefits were not entirely one-sided.

Shortly after the start of today’s second race, there was a wind shift, with advantage once again for the right wing. The move meant that the track was a little skewed, and many had got themselves into a position where they had little chance to make headway. The wind had increased to 12–14 knots, and there was plenty of 'wild thing' action downwind.

After four races, Scott Anderson (AUS) is in the lead, in front of Andrew Landsberg (AUS), second and Ben Moon (USA), third.

However, looking through the results list, many sailors have had at least one poor result, so it will be interesting to see how it looks after tomorrow’s races, after which there will be a deduction.

Like previous years, Sailing Aarhus has teamed up with Active Institute of the University of Aarhus and the event will be widely active online via the event web which will integrate GPS tracking, online video streaming from the race course, live morning and afternoon interviews with daily winners, twitter feets from the race course as well as countless, exciting photos. The 2011 Ronstan A-Class Catamaran World Championship is supported by the City of Aarhus and Sport Event Denmark and is sponsored by Ronstan, Volvo Cars Denmark and Henri Lloyd.
