It’s not very difficult to understand why Royal Geelong Yacht Club Sports boat sailor Cam Rae packs up his boat and heads off to Tropical Queensland to enjoy some exciting racing in a warm environment.
Leaving the cold climate of Geelong’s Corio Bay has become a regular annual winter migration for skipper Cam Rae and his Monkey Business crew of thrill seeking sailors.
The temperature in Geelong was 13.8 degrees when at the same time of day the Monkey Business crew were enjoying a fast spinnaker ride in the Whitsunday Sailing Club hosted Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach race week contested in brilliant sunshine and a comfortable temperature of 19.9 degrees.
Monkey Business provisionally placed 10th on corrected time in a race dominated by former French Kiss America's Cup sailor Pierre Gal helming Kiss was not the result the popular Cam Rae was looking for but the crew totally enjoyed sailing their own race on the fine edge of balance between distinction and disaster.
They remained relentless in their chase of the power sailing front runners Kiss and Blokes World with the flighty Shaw 650 expressing exciting pace in the variable 15-18 knot trade wind.
There was an element of excitement surrounding Cam Rae when he strolled into the media centre to look at the images snapped by Terri Dodds.
He was happy with his result but explained the smaller Monkey Business was unintentionally slugged with the time correction factor of his previous Sports Boat.
'We have bought this to the attention of the Race Committee which I expect will change the results' He said. But he had a deserved smile after he was shown the images of Monkey Business when she left her power sailing wake on Pioneer Bay earlier in the day.
