Solo Sailor turns Southern Corner and heads for home

After more than ten days battling across the headwinds and big seas of the Great Australian Bight, solo sailor Bruce Arms has rounded Tasmania’s South East Cape, the final corner on his Australian circumnavigation.

Arms is seeking to become the first to sail a multihull solo, non-stop and unassisted around Australia, and set a new solo record.

When spotted from a photographer’s plane, Arms was sailing amongst the off-lying islands at the bottom of Tasmania carrying full sail for the first time since passing Perth, Western Australia.

Speaking by satellite phone, Arms explained that the previous night he had been tacking down Tasmania’s west coast battling square backed waves and trying to hold the kettle on the stove.

But the Southern Ocean had moderated her wrath by the time he rounded South West Cape, and he was making good progress in a 15 knot easterly, albeit still hard on the wind.

Sunny skies showcased the spectacular rugged scenery along Tasmania’s south coast, as Arms passed seaward of Maatsuyker Island, site of Australia’s southern most lighthouse, in daylight. He was in good spirits after the trials and frustrations of the Bight and revelling in the unexpected flatter conditions of this traditionally rough passage of water.

Light following winds and seas less than a metre are forecast for Tasmania’s east coast as Arms heads north on the last thousand miles of his voyage with a 450 mile lead over the existing solo record.

Arms is expected to return to Mooloolaba August 16th.
