'New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup'    NYYC/Dan Nerney

New York Yacht Club Invitational Regatta is to be held in Newport, Rhode Island, USA from Sunday 11 September to Saturday 17 September 2011. Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town, South Africa is proud to announce its entry in the prestigious event.

This highly competitive regatta, presented by Rolex, has attracted 22 entries from 15 countries on six continents and represents the top Yacht Clubs from around the world. It will be sailed on identical Swan 42 yachts supplied by NYYC and crewed by Corinthian (non-professional) sailors only.

'This invitation is a great honour for RCYC ' said Commodore John Martin. 'I am very proud to be leading the specially selected Team who we believe have an excellent chance of a podium finish.'

'The Team headed by seasoned sailors who have achieved internationally, include Dave Hudson, Olympic Campaigner and well placed in all events in which he participates; Nicholas Mace, winner of most major Offshore events and Hylton Hale winner of numerous SA Hobie Cat Championships and other Offshore events.'

'With Martin Lamprecht, Gui Verhovert, Gary Sindler, Colin Whitehead, Carl Richter and Nic Baigrie aboard, this team pose a formidable challenge and we are all very excited and motivated to take part in this glamorous event.'

'We are also very pleased to announce that Wadi Xayimpi, one of our stars from the Izivunguvungu Sailing Development Programme, will be included in the Team. Izivunguvungu is a sailing school, funded by RCYC and others, dedicated to developing the youth in sailing.'

Under the guidance of Springbok Sailor, Rick Nankin, the team have been training hard over the past months, aboard Windpower, a yacht very similar to the Swan 42.

Said Martin: 'At the eleventh hour, I was able to put a naming rights sponsor together from African Access Holdings (Pty) Ltd. This is a wholly owned Black Empowerment Company who have acknowledged the work we at RCYC, Isivunguvungu, Race Ahead and others are doing for Youth Development Sailing and the transformation in this sport.'

'We are delighted to welcome African Access aboard for this prestigious event.'

'Their gesture epitomises how, since 1994, we have grown together not only in this Sport, but in our country and we shall utilise this opportunity to the maximum to market our country internationally.'
