Copa del Rey Audi Mapre - Closing the gap

'Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre 2011'    Ruben Ballester

Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre, organized by the Real Club Nautico de Palma, reached a vitally important day on Friday, not quite because of the weather conditions, but with discards in effect after race eight, the points gap has narrowed for overall leader Jason Carroll on Argo, due to a little less consistent results.

It was yet another good day for John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti, in the wake of yesterday's two bullets. Thanks to flawless crew work and perfect tactical calls by Vasco Vascotto, Kilroy scored a first and fourth, moving him ever closer to Carroll in first with a four point lead.

It is tempting to rule out other teams, but in this highly competitive fleet there are some that simply refuse to give up the fight for the title. With two more races scheduled, Geoff Pierini's Shakedown can't avoid thinking about the top spot, especially after performing better than Kilroy. Pierini gladly discarded his 13th place result in race two, elevating his team to be seated in third overall going into the final day of racing. Only eight points separate him from Carroll in first.

For the first time ever, since the start of the Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre, Luca Lalli's B-LinSailing finished off the podium. Lalli is currently in fourth place after his discard came into play, and following a 360° penalty paid in the seventh race.

Trailing Lalli and tactician Lorenz Bressani is Edoardo Lupi's Torpyone. Branko Brcin is calling the shots and there are a lot of reasons for this progressive team to be satisfied, in particular, their regained consistency was absolutely indispensable as they to aim for the top.

Some of the fleets most talented teams did not fair so well including Lanfranco Cirillo's Fantastica, winner of the Audi Sailing Series circuit. Cirillo slipped to finish sixth overall paying a huge price of acquiring two double-digit results yesterday and today. Marc de Antonio's Bribón-Movistar and John Porter's Full Throttle teams held steady, respectively in seventh and eighth overall.

The 30th edition of the Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre comes to an end tomorrow with two more races on schedule.
