There is little over a week to go before Splash sailors from all over the world flock to Lake Lipno, Czech Republic to compete at the 2011 Splash/Flash World Championships.
The event is likely to host over 150 sailors. Located in Southern Czech, the event is likely to be plagued by fickle winds and testing conditions.
The Splash is a 3.5m one-design dinghy with a sail area of 5.5m2. Designed as the Optimist's successor, the Splash class caters for sailors from 13 to 19 years old who are often too light for the larger and heavier classes of single-handed yachts. The class is hugely popular in European nations and has also developed a competitive class in New Zealand.
The New Zealand representative team contains a line-up of top youth sailors, including Splash Class National Champion O’Shea Butler, Taylor Burn, Evangaline Masters and Harris Bindon.
New Zealand has a strong history in this event, having taken first place for six of the last ten years, and recently boasted an all-kiwi Top 3 at the 2010 Splash Worlds in Takapuna, Auckland.
