Champlain Community Sailing Center still in need

'Community Sailing Center flood'

The Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center is still freshly recovering from their immense loss of $75,000 due to the flood that began in late April, 2011, causing the center to open ten weeks behind schedule. Washington and Caledonia counties experienced a record breaking amount of rain that lasted through the first week of May.

Much of New England witnessed areas of flooding as well. Other unfortunate states were Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, which was particularly badly hit. The Sailing Center, located nearby Lake Champlain, was hit hard when the water rose 103.2 feet above sea level, with the average being 95.5 feet.

The damages were colossal ($25,000) and the loss of revenue even greater ($50,000). Although the Sailing Center is facing a difficult time, they have high hopes that their losses will be redeemed. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, a mass support from the community, and a burst of optimism, the Sailing Center is fighting to stay afloat.

Community Sailing Center has launched a 'Staying Afloat' fund, where businesses and residents have been helping the Center with their efforts. This campaign is encouraging people to donate, attend events, participate in the Staying Afloat online auction and purchase equipment directly from the Sailing Center. Surprisingly, despite their unfortunate crisis, the Sailing Center is still holding true to their annual events.

This is a situation that calls for national donations and funders. The Sailing Center has their work cut out for them; they are hopeful and willing to succeed through this crisis, any form of help is greatly appreciated.

For more information on how to help or the Staying Afloat Fund please contact Lesley Chapman at 802-864-2499 or lesley@communitysailingcenter.org. For more information, please visit the Community Sailing Center website.

The Community Sailing Center is a community based 501(c) (3) organization with a mission to inspire the celebration and stewardship of Lake Champlain for all people through access, education and recreation.
