Sabot National Championship is being hosted by Southport Yacht Club from 28th December 2011 to 5th January 2012.

The diminutive 2.43m snub-nose Sabot sailing class which has served as the training dinghy for Olympic Gold medalists will contest the 48th Australian championship at Southport later this summer.

This National championship regatta promises to attract a high standard fleet representing Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland crews.

With weather permitting the race committee plan to host a number of the championship races on a special open ocean course off the Southport Spit.

This decision represents an interesting challenge however racing in the rough water environment is not uncommon with previous successful Australian championships decided on offshore courses at Mooloolaba, Bowen, Airlie Beach and Yeppoon.

Naturally there is an element of pride that exists with the Southport Yacht Club who is preparing to host their first ever Australian Sabot championship from their modern dinghy sailing division at Hollywell.

A similar element of excitement is embraced by former Australian champion and club Coach Shane Smith and the talented new generation sailors Tom Siganto his younger sister Abby and her junior class skipper Ezra Pritchard.

Tom Siganto winner of the Bronze Medal in Tasmania last year remains among the leading contenders for the Senior (One-up) championship while skipper Ezra Pritchard and sheet-hand Abby Siganto promise to improve on the Silver Medal from the 2010 Junior (two-up) National championship series.

As expected Southport and The Gold Coast has proved to be a popular choice of venue with the competitors and families from interstate welcoming the chance to combine their annual holidays while their children compete for championship honours.
