Volvo D-One Gold Cup was held in Fraglia Vela Riva del Garda from 28th to 31st of July 2011. After four days of competition at its highest level, the event drew to a close today.
It was a pleasure for Fraglia Vela Riva to host this emerging and innovative D-One fleet, since its creator Luca Devoti trained right here on Lake Garda. Over the last two days three times World Laser Champion Tom Slingsby of Australia – training here on Trentino Garda for the London Olympics – has shown his power and bravura finishing with three partial victories, giving him the top spot on the podium. His adversary throughout the event, Nick Thompson of Great Britain, came second, and in third place was fellow Brit Giles Scott, the current European Finn Champion, who snatched the third place away from Italian Andrea Casale. Casale was by no means intimidated by these three champions, and even though he hadn’t been on a craft for many years, threw himself into the leaders group from the very start. It was interesting to follow the progress of the D-One on water, which is a single boat, and certainly brought out the best of these great European champions from the Laser and Finn Olympic classes.
Today’s final started early this morning to take advantage of the northerly wind, but the Race Committee chaired by Maurizio Saragoni had to annul the race due to a sudden drop in wind. Luckily, in the time it took to re-organize, the wind had changed direction (from the South), and had picked up enough four to five m/s to restart the final, worth double points and no discards. Tom Slingsby of Australia gave no chance to his rivals, taking the lead right from the beginning, and holding onto it to the very end. A well deserved victory for an athlete who we consider one of our own, due to the weeks he has spent here training on Trentino Garda, and also by being romantically linked to Italian National Surfer Flavia Tartaglini!

In second place overall was Nick Thompson, who came in fourth in the final. There was a surprising third place partial today from Zabalua of Argentina (up to now mediocre around 13 to 15), while Andrea Casale slipped back into ninth place, losing out on the bronze medal, which instead went to Giles Scott. It was, however, a fantastic achievement for Casale, considering the calibre of the first three, all at the top of their game.
Our next date at Fraglia Vela Riva will be from the 2nd to 5th August, with Intervela (420 class), followed by the European Youth Sailing Games from the 13th to 18th August, organized in collaboration with EUROSAF.
