Trans Tasman Tri Challenge is being held 29th July from 1.15pm on Sydney Harbour.

Well known supermaxi sailor Sean Langman’s latest toy, an Orma 60 Trimaran from Europe called Team Australia, and New Zealand sistership TeamVodafoneSailing will line up for a spectacular race dubbed the Trans Tasman Tri Challenge.

The boats will go head to head for the 384 nautical mile course starting in Rushcutters Bay at 1.15pm and finishing at Southport on the Queensland Gold Coast. They will start themselves and record their own finish times in what is an unofficial sprint up the New South Wales and south eastern Queensland coast.

Team Australia arrived through Sydney Heads this morning completing its four day delivery from Noumea without incident. This afternoon the two international crewmen who assisted project manager Josh Alexander and John Crawford with the delivery, Frenchman Thierry Duprey, skipper of Gitana 12 in the 2006 Route de Rhum, and Italian Simone Gatea, who sailed the trimaran while it was Banque Populaire, will meet the rest of the Aussie contingent including skipper Sean Langman, Joe de Kock and sail maker Shane Guanaria. Josh Alexander will also join the crew for the trip north.

Tomorrow Langman will take command at the wheel of his new trimaran for the first time. Sean purchased Team Australia with the intention of becoming familiar with canting mast technology which he plans to adapt to a monohull supermaxi in the future.

The 60 foot Team Australia is capable of reaching speeds close to 50 knots but with this weekend’s light forecast, Langman is not expecting his tri to show us its best.

The Trans Tasman Tri Challenge creates the possibility of a double dose of Kiwi pride on the line this weekend with tomorrow night’s clash between the All Blacks and South Africa in the Tri Nations rugby test.
