ISAF Nations Cup 2011 Grand Final is being held in Sheboygan, USA, from 13 to 18 September.
Andy Shaw and the Royal Southern Academy Match Racing Team finished as runners up in the recently completed ISAF Nations Cup European Championship in Poland (18-23 July), taking some notable scalps in the process. As a result, this feisty team has earned a Wild Card entry to the ISAF Nations Cup Final in the USA this September.
Andy, Ed Dyer and Ed Fitzgerald are already World Student Match Racing champions. The Team, now joined by Andy’s brother Simon, is on its way to take on the world’s best in the final of the Nations Cup, ISAF’s World Championship of Match Racing. Having despatched a strong list of competitors in the Round Robin and Peter Wibroe, a previous world number eight in the semi-final, they ended up in the final against Tarnacki Race Team, the Polish champions and the world number 31 on home territory and in familiar boats.
Ed Dyer, Academy Team Captain, said, 'The Polish Match Tour Diamant 3000 were big 34ft boats for just four guys to sail, so we all had a lot on! We put our campaign together well, ensuring we arrived a day early to gain an extra day’s training on top of the allocated slot.'
In the light to medium and shifty breeze the Academy Match Racing Team was leading the way but in the windy final, the bigger Tarnacki Race Team was able to hold its boat flatter and faster to win 3-0.
'We’re delighted that we gave many of our elders and betters a run for their money and so win the wild card to the World Championship. We’d like to thank Simon our 'Yoda' and thank all our supporters at the Southern. We always welcome newcomers who want to give match racing a try at the Club,' commented Ed.
