Volvo Cup 2011 for the Laser SB3 class was hosted by Fraglia Vela Riva during the 23rd and 24th July. A total of five races were completed.
Despite the bad weather forecast on Trentino Garda the two days of wind gave the right conditions for five out of the six races scheduled to be completed.
The staff of Fraglia Vela Riva were very pleased to have had the opportunity to once again organize this competition which was well-fought to the very end with five crews having only a handful of points separating each of them.
On Saturday the wind from the south was strong and gusty - 18 knots. Three races were held back to back. It was a colourful spectacle where the top contenders all vied back and forth for a place on the podium. On Sunday two races were held with the north wind which then dropped during the second race thus reducing the course which had already been shifted to the left.
The main competitors in this round were Giovanni Meloni at the helm of Bravi Thytronic of Vincenzo Graciotti, who finished third after a race that went all wrong and was discarded making him almost lose his place on the podium (4-1-4-14-4 partials).

The British crew on Xcellent with John Pollard (world number six), at the helm took second place (1-5-3-7-1). But this round belonged to Vittorio Ruggero on Talj with Roberto Benamati who, after 'warming up' in the first race (seventh), performed so well in the following races that he won the round overall (7-3-1-2-3). He has been showing steady improvement since the last round. Roberto Caresani reached third place with the penultimate race but with only an 11th in the last, dropped to fourth position overall missing the podium by just one point (3-2-8-1-11 partials). There were good performances from Alessandro Cabras (YC Alghero), second in the first and last races; and Carlo Brenco second in the third race.
Next date on the calendar is Thursday with the start of the D-One Gold Cup, featuring the top International helmsmen.
