Members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, last evening Tuesday 19 July, elected a new Board of Directors at the club’s sixty seventh annual general meeting.

Commodore Garry Linacre was re-elected to serve a second year of office as senior flag officer of Australia’s leading ocean racing club.

An election for the position of Vice Commodore was conducted between Howard Piggott and Michael Cranitch. Howard Piggott was declared the Vice Commodore. The positions of Rear Commodore will be served by John Cameron and Michael Cranitch. Paul Billingham was re-elected as Treasurer.

Geoff Bonus; David Champtaloup; Anthony Dunn; Nick Kingsmill; Arthur Lane and John Markos were re-elected as Directors of the club.

'I would like to thank all members of 2011/12 Board of Directors in advance for the dedication and time it takes to fulfill the responsibilities of being a member of the board, and look forward to another productive year serving the members of the club,' Commodore Linacre concluded.

David Kellett AM was made a Life Member of the CYCA, following a resolution passed by fellow Members of the club. Kellett served as a member of the Board from 1982 to 1990, and was Commodore from 1988-1990. He is the chief radio operator of the radio relay vessel team for the CYCA’s major offshore races, is a member of the Offshore Racing Council (ORC) and ISAF representative on ORC and has been the ISAF Treasurer since 2008. He has held several senior positions in the administration of the sport of sailing and has dedicated many hours of valuable service to the CYCA and the sport of sailing.

Three members were also recognised as 50 Year Members: Keith Moss; Peter Hill and John ‘Basil’ Diethelm.

Keith Moss joined the CYCA on the premise of getting a ride to Hobart in 1961 and was promptly informed that 'If you aren’t an expert sailor, then you should think about becoming a cook or navigator.' Moss chose the latter and took part in 14 Sydney Hobart races on Tahuna, Cavalier, Boambilliee, Duet, Bush Whacker, Aphrodite and Marloo. He was also part of the 1969 winning Southern Cross Cup team onboard Boambilliee.

One of his longer voyages to Hobart was sailed on Cavalier, a Swanson 31 owned by John Roche, and Moss recalls 'We were coming up the Derwent River on our approach to the finish and we could see the fireworks that were marking the New Year’s Eve celebrations and we thought we’d missed out on all the celebrations!'

Moss also volunteered his time to serve as a Director of the Club and was involved in the Sailing, House and Publications Committees. Moss has hung up his sailing boots but still maintains a strong interest in the Club

Peter Hill is the owner of Ruthless, that competed in seven Sydney Hobart races and more recently Ruthmagic which has raced out of the Club for many years.

Basil Diethelm was unable to attend to accept due to his sailing activities overseas, yet expressed his thanks to the Commodore and the Club in his absence.

'At 17 years of age I was beside myself to become a member of the CYCA. Bill Psaltis was Commodore at the time and Merv Davey in the Office and maintaining discipline; and I’ve been a very proud member ever since.

'I have sailed twice around the world and raced in many places; however I still hold the belief that the CYCA is the best yacht racing club...and I have seen a lot of yacht clubs,' Diethelm added.

'It is excellent that the club continues to develop its site, I encourage you to keep it going. I was present many years ago when members at an AGM voted to buy ‘Arrowsmiths Boat Yard’. A number of member were against the deal but fortunately the vote was passed otherwise the Club would not be in a position to develop today,' he added.
