U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship 2011 are being held from 12 to 14 July on Barnegat Bay. Forty teams will race in Club 420s. Mantoloking Yacht Club (Mantoloking, N.J.) and Bay Head Yacht Club (Bay Head, N.J.) are co-hosts for the 2011 U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy, a US Sailing National Championship event. Among this year’s contenders are Holly Tullo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and her crew Haley Fox (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Tullo and Fox attempt to improve on their third place finish in last year’s championship. Another returning team is Allyson Donahue (Brigantine, N.J.) and her crew Maddie Widneier (Pipersville, Pa.), who finished tenth last year. Both Tullo and Donahue have already been accepted to compete as skippers in the C420 division at US Sailing’s 2011 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships in August. Two days of clinics for the competing sailors led by US Sailing’s National Junior Coach Frank Ustach and a team of distinguished junior and college sailing coaches preceded competition on Sunday and Monday, July 10-11. Championship Notes The U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship is an open event…Competitors are between the ages 13 and 18… A total of 10 races are scheduled. Three races must be completed to constitute a complete championship. When fewer than six races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores. When six or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score… Racing begins each day at 10:30 a.m. ET (subject to change)… Racing will take place on Barnegat Bay at the Green Island course… Trophies will be awarded to the skippers and crew finishing in the top three places. US Sailing medals will be presented to the top five finishing teams. The C. Thomas Clagett Sportsmanship Award will be awarded to a team based on the results of the competitors’ secret ballot.
