Sail-World.com : Watt's new in marine gensets

Watt's new in marine gensets

'Box of tricks: all models have the option of a soundshield to reduce noise.'    Nanni Diesel

They’re the forgotten generation, the one motor on board that produces power without glory. When your 240-volt genset fails, however, you certainly know about it.

Dinner stays cold and you get hot because the microwave and air-conditioning won’t work. Your wife can’t use the hairdryer, watch TV or so much as boil a kettle.

Pleasure boating, these days, is becoming increasingly reliant on 240-volt power generation. We’re staying away from the marina longer while demanding all the luxuries of home.

It was enough to inspire Nanni Diesel to extend its focus from marine propulsion to electrical generation, with the Sydney-based company now offering models from 3.5 to 10 kVA.

All use Coelmo technology combined with Nanni diesel engineering.

The single-phase, fully enclosed 3.5 kVA model may be the baby of the family but delivers a solid 15 amperes at 230 volts … equivalent to marina shorepower.

The single-cylinder, 280cc Ferryman diesel develops 6hp and weighs just 37kg, making it light and compact enough for smaller yachts and cruisers. They’re perfect for topping up your 12-volt house system and also running 240-volt household appliances.

The 3.5 comes standard with a sophisticated digital instrument panel that’s easy to connect and compatible with all existing installations. Maintenance is simplified by having five removable side panels.

The 6kVA model delivers a current of 26 amperes, being based on a twin-cylinder Nanni block. It runs at up to 3000rpm, using indirect fuel injection.

Like the 3.5 it’s fully enclosed in an aluminium sound-proof canopy and also water cooled, so it emits just 54 dB at 7 metres (the equivalent of a dishwasher).

A soundshield is optional for the QMS7.5M genset, affording it the same noise output as the smaller models.

Electric connections, water inlet and outlet joints as well as the exhaust pipe are all integrated into the cocoon.
At the heart of the 7.5 is a three-cylinder Kubota base engine with a capacity of 1123cc. Nanni’s E-TVCS combustion system allows the diesel to comply with the most stringent emissions regulations while maintaining low fuel consumption.

A 'Compact Cooling' heat exchange system should afford this unit a long and trouble-free life. .

For ongoing monitoring, the optional Luxe GE instrument panel incorporates coolant temperature and oil pressure indicators.

Rounding out the range is the highly charged QMS10M (10kVA), again available with a canopy. Designed for larger boats with multiple air-conditioning units and all-electric galleys, it employs a four-cylinder, 1.5-litre Kubota diesel that generates 18hp at a leisurely 1500rpm.

E-TVCS combustion and Compact Cooling are employed, while for maintenance there’s timing gear and easy access to the various service points.

The alternator delivers a single phase tension of 230 volts. It is also equipped with an electronic regulator which, together with the constant engine speed, provides an excellent stability to frequency and tension.

All the gensets can be retrofitted as they tap into the existing fuel supply and start battery. Separate water intakes and exhaust outlets are installed to ensure the units remain self sufficient.

Retail prices start at $9500 to $15,900.
