Eurex Match Cup at Chicago Match Race Center

'Eurex Match Cup at CMRC'    Chicago Match Race Center

The summer match racing season is now in full-swing, with this weekend's Eurex Match Cup being held at the Chicago Match Race Center over Friday-Sunday, July 8-10th. This is the fourth ISAF Grade 3 event being held at CMRC this season, and is an important qualifying event for next month's Chicago Grade 2 Invitational, the first of four US Grade 2 events in the Grand Slam Series.

The lure of earning points on the ISAF World Ranking List and an opportunity to qualify for the Grade 2 has brought not only some CMRC regulars back to the match racing battleground, but also some new young teams interested in advancing into the top of the match racing scene.

'High rankings gets you invitations,' says CMRC Sailing Director Taylor Canfield, 'But which comes first, the chicken or the egg? To get invited organizers look at your ranking, but in order to get the ranking, you have to sail in the top events. Qualifiers like this present the opportunity to break into the next tier.'

Among these new teams is Jordan Reece, who is from Sydney, Australia and is a member of the True Blue Racing team representing the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. This youth match racing team has had podium finishes at top international youth events in Australia and New Zealand, and is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other recent Aussie and Kiwi teams that are now regulars on the World Match Racing Tour. Reece will be sailing his first CMRC event with Henry Kernot, Hamish Hardy, Jaidan Stevens, and Arnau Farris-Knowles.

Another young skipper from overseas is Tyler Rice from the US Virgin Islands, who has been successful on the US intercollegiate circuit as a member of the Brown University sailing team, where in only his first year he was a runner-up in the Intercollegiate Sloop Nationals and the Intercollegiate New England championship. Rice will have as crew some talented CMRC regulars to help guide him in his first event on the CMRC TOM 28's: Jen Wilson, Luke Adams, Billy Quaranto and Josh Rubenstein.

While living in Toronto now, Magnus Sandberg hails from Sweden, where he was a national champion in the 470 and active for years in the highly-competitive Swedish match racing scene. He is now building a new match racing team, whose recent highlights include finishing fifth at last year's Open Sweden Match Racing Championship, and he is currently ranked the second highest team in his newly-adopted Canada.

Returning from the GoPro Match Cup, are the following skippers and their teams: Don Wilson, from Chicago; Leo Vasiliev from Port Washington, NY; Guy Mossman from Mt Pleasant, SC; Taylor Canfield of St Thomas, USVI; and Steven Lowery from Highland Park, IL.

The on-water race management team will be led by Principal Race Officer Bill Canfield, with the umpire team led by Chief Umpire Tom Rinda, and the overall event management led by Event Director Mary Anne Ward. A double-Round Robin format is intended, followed by a Semi-Final and Final round.

Racing is scheduled to start daily from Friday to Sunday, July 8-10 at 9 AM on courses set off the park seawall at Belmont Harbor. Real-time results and videos can be found on the CMRC website and live text updates can be followed on Twitter @matchracecenter.

Official Partners of the CMRC include Eurex, CME Group, Newedge, City Inns family of hotels, and Line Honors is the Official Clothing Supplier to CMRC.
