RPAYC University Match Racing Championship 2011 - In support of the outstanding talent and performances by University sailors in Match racing, University Match Racing Sydney want to provide them with a platform and help stage a quality match-racing regatta that would encourage more professionalism and growth in Australian and University sailing. We are looking forward to hosting the best Australian university teams at our championships.

The Organising Authority for the 2011 RPAYC University Match Racing Championship will be the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club under the auspices of Yachting Australia. This is also an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) grade 3 event. Eight top university teams (40 sailors) will fight it out against each other on the Force 24 class of yachts.

The Championship has been specially planned on the 23rd and 24th of September, before the start of the 2011 Australian University Games in Gold Coast. Sailing at the games is scheduled to officially begin on 26th with racing only starting on the 27th. With the addition of the RPAYC University Match racing championship to the 2011 Australian university sailing calendar, it promises to be the most exciting week of university racing in 2011.

It has been confirmed that some members of the crew that won silver and bronze medals at the 2010 World University Match Racing Championships will take part in the event. Additionally, we hope to see future Australian sailing champions at the event such as Krystal Weir, Lucinda Whitty, Jay Griffin, David Gilmour and Tara McCall. Krystal Weir and Lucinda Whitty were recently selected to represent the Australian sailing team for the 2012 London Olympic test event (July 2011). Jay Griffin won the 2011 Harken International Youth Match Racing Championships (Auckland). David Gilmour finished second at the 2011 Warren Jones International Youth Regatta (Perth) and Tara McCall crewed for the winning team of the 2011 Harken Women’s International Match Racing Regatta (Sydney).

Our event organiser and host, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious yacht clubs. The Club is situated on Green Point on the pristine body of water called Pittwater, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. In the sport of sailing it is regarded as one of the leading and premier Yacht Clubs in Australia. RPAYC also has a rich tradition of producing some of Australia’s best sailors like James Spithill, who in 2010 became the youngest skipper to ever win the America’s Cup. The team at RPAYC is working hard to ensure the championship is a success.

Nautilus Marine Boat Insurance has come in as one of our main sponsors for the championship. Nautilus has also been involved with supporting sailing regattas all over Australia like Sydney’s favorite Olympic class regatta, Sail Sydney. Their sponsorship will assist us in delivering a very memorable championship.

In addition, Harken Australia, a leading global manufacturer and marketer of quality sailboat hardware and accessories, have kindly offered their support to the championship.

As always, we welcome additional sponsorship from companies keen on being a part of this new and exciting event involving young and promising athletes who possess a positive attitude and a strong desire to win.

We believe this event has the potential to help inspire and create future champions at regattas like the America’s Cup and World Match racing tour. We also believe it serves to promote the sport to universities in Sydney.

As this event is expected to have high quality professional racing, race management, umpires, boats and first class club facilities, it will definitely be a university regatta none of the top university teams will want to miss out on.

The NoR will be available from the RPAYC website very soon.
