US Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship 2011 - McGlynn victorious

'Day 3 - US Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship 2011'    John Liebenberg

US Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship 2011 was held from 25 to 30 June in Point Richmond, California and raced in Laser Radials.

Kelly McGlynn -  John Liebenberg
Kelly McGlynn (Flourtown, Pa.) has been a strong contender at US Sailing’s U.S. Junior Women’s Singlehanded Championship over the past two years. She finished fifth last year and sixth in 2009. McGlynn raced by the field of 56 to win her first Nancy Leiter Clagett Memorial Trophy on Thursday.

McGlynn excelled today in the heavy winds by finishing second twice and winning race seven. She finished with 26 points and won the championships by 15 points over Christina Frost (Nokomis, Fla.), who had 41 points. Kaitlyn Baab (Saratoga, Calif.) finished third with 43 points.

'I was really looking forward to heavy wind today,' said McGlynn. 'There was less guessing involved. We got off to good starts in every race, so we didn’t have to find a lane.'

McGlynn looks forward to attending Brown University in the fall and sailing on the varsity team. She is a member of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in Beach Haven, N.J.

Wind speed increased on San Francisco Bay throughout Thursday’s three races. Racing began this morning at 11:05 a.m. PDT with 11 knot breezes in race six. In race seven, wind speed improved to 18 knots, and in race eight wind speed jumped to 23 knots.

US Sailing's 2011 US Junior Women's Singlehanded Championship was hosted by Richmond Yacht Club.

Two days of clinics for the competing sailors led by US Sailing’s National Junior Coach Frank Ustach and a team of distinguished junior and college sailing coaches preceded competition on Sunday and Monday this week.
