Congratulations to 2011 Audi Melges 20 East Coast Champion Paul Reilly, from Cedar Lake, Wis. aboard Red Sky. Three intense days of competition and a six light air race series put Reilly out front to win the fleet’s first ever East Coast Championship held in conjunction with Bacardi Newport Sailing Week, hosted by Sail Newport.

'Paul was so psyched to win this regatta. We started out fast and sailed really well and then had some difficulty on the last day.' says Red Sky tactician Andy Burdick. 'Our sailing really did not change, we sailed well, made some mistakes, but most of all it was the fleet that was tough. The racing was really close all of the time which made it exciting. We were fortunate to be in there most races.'

'The Melges 20 Racing in Newport was fantastic. Bacardi, Anthony Kotoun and all of the other organizers put together a really fun event for the Melges 20 fleet. After racing appetizers, cold beer and lots of dock chatter about the boats and the growing class made it really fun. Thanks Anthony!' continued Burdick.

Twelve entries strong, the fleet sailed in some of the most challenging of conditions and up against the stiffest of competition. Reilly and Rob Wilber's Cinghiale really took it to the max on Saturday and Sunday with the two ending the event dead even in points. Reilly won the tie-breaker. In third overall was Michael Kiss on Bacio.

'The Audi Melges 20 class is growing and the boat was the talk of the event. We are looking forward to the Nationals there in late August. It's going to be really, really fun!'
