Dragon Worlds 2013 selection criteria for UK entries

Dragon World Championships 2013 are being held in Weymouth from 8 to 14 September.

It is expected that demand for British places at the 2013 Dragon Worlds will be high and the British Dragon Association (BDA) would therefore like to clarify the selection criteria to BDA members and other UK based sailors with an interest in entering. In addition to those who do qualify, we shall need some help and assistance in running this major IDA regatta so members not racing are encouraged to volunteer their services!

Number of GBR Entries
Selection by the BDA is required to enter the 2013 Dragon Worlds. The number of boats qualified to enter is determined by the IDA, under Appendices 9 and 10 in the International Dragon Class Rules. Currently, based on the size of our fleet we are entitled to select 11 boats, plus 50% (5 boats) of that entitlement, at the discretion of the IDA if there is space. Selection will be based on the helms performance. Helms must apply by 30th September 2012. All applying helms must be members of the BDA and be ISAF registered. They must also either be British nationals or sail regularly in Britain and at least one crew member must also be British.

Of the available places, three may be awarded at the sole discretion of the BDA Officers; a place has already been allocated to Martin Payne to enter under this discretion. The remainder will be awarded to the top eight applicants, with up to a further five if permitted by the IDA, as calculated from the helm's qualifying regatta results added together on the low points scoring system per the ISAF Rulebook. The ranking will be calculated from results, ignoring any non-BDA members and helms who have qualified through another route. The minimum points from an Edinburgh Cup will be one point whereas the minimum points from any of the BDA regional regattas will be two points. Those not attending a regatta will be awarded one more point for that regatta than the total number of participating BDA helmsmen in all the ranking regattas. Selection will be based on a participant's three best results.

In addition, the current World Champion, Lawrie Smith, will have an automatic entry, as will any GBR sailors in the top 20 of the final 2012 International Ranking List. An additional 2 places may be allocated at the discretion of the IDA; applications for these places must be received by the IDA Secretary three months before the event, i.e. early May 2013.

If at the deadline for applications for selection, 30th September 2012, the number of applicants falls short of the BDA allocation, the BDA Officers may, at their discretion, make further selections from those who have applied to them to compete at the Worlds.

Qualifying BDA Regattas
The qualifying regattas from which results can be submitted will be the 2012 regional Championships, together with the Edinburgh Cup in 2011 and 2012.

Selection will thus be based on the three best results achieved by helms in the following regattas:

2011 Edinburgh Cup - 13-16 July 2011 - Abersoch
2012 East Coast Championship - 25-27 May 2012 - Levington
2012 Northern Area Championship - 30 June 0 2 July 2012 - Cultra
2012 Edinburgh Cup - 3-7 July 2012 - Cultra
2012 South Coast Championship - 15021 July 2012 - Cowes

Further details of all events are available here

Selection Timetable
Any helm wishing to be considered for selection must notify the BDA Hon Sec of his or her wish in writing/e-mail to admin@britishdragons.org.uk, not later than 30th September 2012. The BDA will then notify, in writing/e-mail, all applicants for places not later than 31st October 2012. If all the available places have not been filled the BDA may allocate surplus places to helms wishing to enter at its discretion until the closing date for entries.
